It’s this conflict of ideologies that keeps the show entertaining. For example, it’s funny to see him threaten to beat Nessa’s head “till the white meat shows” only to have her turn around and call the social workers on him. His “old school” approach of strictness, spankings, and ‘busting heads’ offers up a lot of laughs. Mac is a bit edgier, though, and less politically correct.

I’ve always enjoyed Bernie Mac and this series is based on his comedy act (though significantly cleaned up in language and content). Getting the first season on DVD allowed me to catch up on how the series was set up and filled in all the blanks that I wasn’t clear on. I”ve only seen a few episodes of the Bernie Mac Show, but I’ve always enjoyed what I’ve seen. But he soon finds that all of his ideas work better in theory than in practice. Bernie is determined to lay down the law and give them an old fashioned, strict upbringing. “Baby Girl” Bryana repeats everything she hears while at the same time not generally listening. Young Jordan is emotional, has early asthma, and is prone to temper tantrums and panic attacks. Thirteen year old Nessa is sullen and disrespectful. Despite being loyal to family, Bernie finds himself in over his head.
However, when Bernie’s sister is arrested for drugs, he agrees to take in her three children. They live a happy, peaceful life alone together.
